Josh Smith, aka Rev. J Mikhael Smith has been writing songs and performing with his Knoxville, TN based band Handsome and the Humbles since 2014. With a style described as “Garage-icana”—drawing comparisons to Artists such as Uncle Tupelo, Wilco, and American Aquarium, Smith’s songwriting has garnished praise from critics and media outlets alike, including American Songwriter and No Depression. Gerry Driver of Photogroupie UK writes, “No matter if the stories Smith weaves are uplifting or tragic there’s always something deeply human about how he constructs them. They are simple and poetic with nothing extraneous. Every line he sings feels as though he’s laying bare our frailties.”
Smith’s releases, both with Handsome And The Humbles, as well as solo projects under the moniker, Rev. J. Mikhael Smith, (yes, he’s also an ordained minister), have spent time on the Americana Music Association charts. In 2023, Smith followed love to Texas, and he has been making new fans and friends in the Lone Star State a gig at a time, while also finishing up work on the next Handsome And The Humbles album, due out in 2024.
